Special events for Teenagers this summer in the Cotswolds

A series of youth events and activities targeted at teenagers and young people will take place at venues across the Cotswolds during the school summer holidays.  Activities include graffiti art, music, bushcraft, gladiator duel inflatables, African drumming, henna, unicycling, and juggling skills. Young people will also be given an opportunity to share their views about what it is like to live in the Cotswolds and what is important to them.

Local community and arts organisation World Jungle is organising the programme with support from Cotswold District Council and Gloucestershire County Council’s Youth Activities funding.  Events will be based around five locations across the district: Cirencester, Chipping Campden, Northleach, Tetbury and Fairford.

Young people have been consulted on the programme and involved in decision making around what activities should be included.   As well as incorporating events that have proved very popular in the past – including the ‘Scratch and Skate’ festivals in Cirencester and Tetbury and support for the popular Phoenix Festival in Cirencester – a series of special youth events will take place in Tetbury, Fairford and Northleach with lots of activities on offer.  Details of all the events can be found on www.worldjungle.org.uk   and are listed below.

At the events young people will also be invited to take part in a consultation exercise to help identify key issues and needs in order to inform future work and planning in this area.

Ben Ward from World Jungle said:

“We hope that this programme gives young people access to some really great events to enjoy over the summer holidays – and importantly also gives them the chance to get their voice heard about the issues which affect their lives and the changes they would like to see happen.  We will be bringing along our “Ideas Pod” (I-POD) to the events, a quiet space people can enter to record their views and opinions on what matters to them. We hope some may be inspired to go on and join youth councils or groups to help make a difference to their communities.”

Cllr Alison Coggins, Cabinet Member for Health and Leisure at Cotswold District Council, has been impressed by the activities on offer:

“Cotswold District Council and Gloucestershire County Council’s Youth Activities support and fund this programme of events for young people. It’s good to see so many activities to choose from, and I am sure that children across the District will enjoy them immensely.  There is no need to book the many free activities – families just need to turn up and participate. It’s also worth pointing out that the few sessions which carry a fee are very reasonable with most costing as little as £3.”

As in previous years, World Jungle will also be running activities and events for younger children and families across the Cotswolds over the summer holidays.  Details of both programmes can be found on the World Jungle website with a link from the ‘What’s On’ page:  www.worldjungle.org.uk
